A couple of months ago, I purchased a round trip Manila to Singapore ticket on a whim. Since I had already gone to Singapore many times, I decided to do a staycation there to escape the stresses caused by Manila. I had to choose a hotel that I’d actually stay in, not just sleep in, and fitting the bill was The St. Regis Singapore, which surely is one of the city-state’s most glamorous and luxurious. And as I checked out from the hotel, my stay turned out to be one of my most memorable.
I arrived at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2, and after passing immigration, I found my way to the bus stop for SBS Transit bus #36. I could’ve taken an Uber to the hotel, but given there’s a bus that stops right in front of the St. Regis, I rode it. Besides, taking SBS Transit bus #36 is like being on a field trip, as it passes by the scenic Marina Bay and the East Coast—though it does take about an hour to get to the Downtown Core.
Anyway, the hotel’s location along Tanglin Road is strategic. The hotel enjoys close proximity from Orchard Road whilst being hidden from the traffic and the throngs of tourists that litter it. The bus stop in front that I mentioned makes it accessible to virtually anywhere in Singapore, while the Orchard MRT Station is a leisurely ten-minute walk. Those who wish to sightsee in style, on the other hand, have the hotel’s fleet of Bentleys and luxury limousines at their disposal.
I arrived at the hotel and was welcomed by its warm and friendly staff. The lobby was astoundingly gorgeous. It had a nice mix of local influence and European flair executed in a way that was elegant and by no means tacky. And the hotel’s owners apparently have a sophisticated taste in art, as evidenced by the number of pieces strategically placed all over the hotel.
Instead of the traditional front desks, the hotel has smaller desks with chairs for a more personalized experience. The associates checking me in were Filipino, so I immediately felt at home. I was there way before the supposed check-in time, but luckily, my room was already available, and I was afforded an upgrade to boot.
I got a Grand Deluxe Room sized at 52 square meters—very spacious by Singapore standards. Its classic design and décor were undoubtedly luxurious, and it was styled in such a way that it still felt modern and updated. The large windows let copious amounts of sunlight in and gave a splendid view of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
The bed was indulgently comfortable, as were the linen and pillows that complemented it. I had only found out belatedly that the throw pillows were covered in Jim Thompson silk, while the sofa seats were upholstered in elegant designer fabrics—no wonder they were cozy. Rounding up the room’s amenities were the handsome executive desk, the 42” LED TV, and the high-tech IP phone. The immaculate bathroom, meanwhile, was set in French marble and had nicely-scented toiletries by Remede.
One of the hallmarks of a stay at any St. Regis hotel or resort in the world is the signature butler service. With one press of a button on the room’s phone, a friendly and smiling butler came with my needs—from serving coffee and TWG tea to heating up my hawker food, which they impressively presented like room service. The St. Regis Butler Service can assist on almost all guest requests: beverage service, unpacking and packing, and pressing, among others.
For two mornings, I looked forward to the breakfast at Brasserie Les Saveurs, which served a truly five-star array of Western and Asian items. They had a buffet, live cooking stations, as well as hot items off the menu. Among the highlights were the lobster and caviar omelet, and the Japanese breakfast set, which included a perfectly-cooked slab of salmon.
And since I spent most of my time in Singapore at the hotel, I was able to check out its facilities fully. They have a beautifully-landscaped tropical spa pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an indoor tennis court, and the famous Remede Spa. By the way, unbeknownst to many, the wet area facilities of Remede Spa are free for all hotel guests to use.
I also had a decadent Sunday Champagne Brunch at Brasserie Les Saveurs, as well as a relaxing Signature Warm Jade Stone Massage at Remede Spa, but I will tackle those on separate posts.
