Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 was inaugurated recently amid great fanfare. The excitement was well-deserved—the brand new “resort” airport features a vastly improved experience for passengers.
Many new features were added to the new terminal, while some others were transferred from the old one, among them Plaza Premium Lounge, which fortunately was afforded a larger space in its new home. I flew internationally out of Cebu recently, so I was able to check it out.
After clearing immigration, I walked past a few duty free shops and followed the directions to the lounge. Interestingly, unlike its previous location, it’s now found a level below the departures concourse, accessible by elevator. I thought this development made the lounge seem more exclusive than before.
I went in and was immediately welcomed by the charming staff. It was the middle of the night with only a couple of departures and few business class passengers, so the lounge was thankfully quiet.
As I found out, being the only independent lounge in the airport, it serves the premium class and upper loyalty tier passengers of all airlines—save for Philippine Airlines, which operates its own lounge. As well, it accommodates Priority Pass holders and paying customers.
But let me assure you, space and seating are not an issue. It’s much larger than its previous site, accommodating a dining room with a long communal table, a couple of seating sections (one with a tarmac view), and a small kids’ area.
Anyway, I thought it carried the same style and feel of other Plaza Premium lounges elsewhere—which always look elegant and modern. The ambiance was relaxing, thanks to its soft lighting and muted color scheme.
Even in the middle of the night, there was a live buffet—serving breakfast at the time—of hot and cold dishes, and eggs were made to order. There also was a bar that offered a host of beverages, including local beer brews.
I checked out the toilet and shower, and aside from being new, it looked immaculately clean.
Service, like my previous visit in the old lounge, was cordial, and it was personalized that, when it was time to board, staff approached passengers—which was way better than a loud announcement over the PA.
The lounge has its own wifi connection, and based on my experience, it was fast enough for my work. Seats are equipped with power ports, so that was a plus.
In all, it was an excellent visit to the new Plaza Premium Lounge at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and truly, I’m glad that they now have a bigger home at Terminal 2.
