There’s so much to see and do (and eat) in Montreal. Luckily though, much of what it has to offer—for first-timers, at least—aren’t far apart from each other, and with its efficient transportation system, touring the city is easy. However, it’s still important to pick a hotel that would put one in the center of the action—somewhere the metro and buses can easily be taken or somewhere several spots can be reached on foot. First hand, I experienced how Residence Inn Montreal Downtown fit the bill.
Residence Inn Montreal Downtown, as the name signifies, is located in the downtown core—nearest landmarks include the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and McGill University. Bus stops surround the block it’s on, and the nearest subway stop (Peel) is literally steps away from the hotel. Hence, as mentioned, much of what the city has to offer is easily accessible, and the airport is just two rides (express bus and subway) away.
With most of its footprint in Canada and the United States, Residence Inn is a name under the Marriott International umbrella, joining equally loved brands, such as the Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, Westin, and JW Marriott. While also welcoming those staying for a night or two, it’s an extended stay brand (hence, “Residence”) that features zones for working, relaxing, eating, and sleeping, and notably, a fully-equipped kitchen.
The hotel was by no means opulent from the outside, while the lobby was also simple yet modern. I was checked in by the warm and friendly staff, and fortunately, my room was ready by the time I was there at midday.
I stayed in a Studio with two double beds. Playing with the rates, I found that rate per night is the same whether two, three, or four adults would stay in the room—good value if you ask me, especially that hotels in Canada aren’t always affordable.
In terms of aesthetics, the room was simple, yet it was modern and neat. It was spacious too, allowing room even for a furry friend, since the hotel is pet-friendly.
The room had a suite of amenities. Aside from the comfortable beds, the room came with a fully-equipped kitchen, which isn’t always the case with extended-stay hotels and apartments. The kitchen featured a full-size fridge, stovetop, dishwasher, microwave, as well as dinnerware and cookware—with these, full meals can be cooked and not just reheated.
The room also had a loveseat, a desk, and a large LED TV. The bathroom, while on the small side, was spotless.
Aside from the room itself, what I also liked about the hotel was the breakfast. Frankly, I don’t expect much when the breakfast is free for all guests, but what I had at the hotel was above the average by North American standards. There were hot dishes and a waffle machine, and it offered world-famous Montreal bagels.
The hotel also featured a grab and go corner, a 24/7 fitness center, a business center, and for those staying longer, a self-service laundromat.
I had a great stay at Residence Inn Montreal Downtown. While it targets travelers in the city for longer periods of time, I saw how it could be perfect for those who are in Montreal for a short visit. Its location is phenomenal, and its rooms and amenities cover any traveler’s needs.
