It may be unknown to some, but around the second week of February each year is actually International Scotch Day. Well, as the name implies, it’s the day to celebrate the world’s favorite whiskey, which has its roots in Scotland (a lovely place, by the way). The day is picked from the week of birth of Alexander Walker, one of the world’s most influential “Master Blenders” and son of Johnnie Walker who brought Scotch to the world.
With Johnnie Walker and The Singleton among its globally-renowned portfolio of brands, Diageo is heading the celebration with its annual campaign called #LoveScotch, which is meant to make the world talking, thinking, and trying Scotch.
The celebration has already begun here in Manila alongside some 70 other countries in the world. Last February 6, we attended a kick-off party at the Manila House Private Members’ Club with Hollywood actor James Marsden and Global Scotch Whisky Ambassador Ervin Trykowski leading the festivities.
In the event, we got to appreciate the versatility of Scotch as a spirit by trying it in several cocktails as concocted by Manila’s top establishments—Yes Please, 12/10, and The Curator—who put up pop up bars. They used coveted Scotch whiskies, namely Johnny Walker Black Label, Johnny Walker Gold Label Reserve, and Singleton of Dufftown 12. Our favorite was 12/10’s Miami Vice, composed of peach bitters, ginger ale, mint, and a generous pour of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve.
Ervin also hosted a slew of tasting sessions to get guests acquainted with different Scotch on offer.
From February 8—which again is International Scotch Day—until the end of the month, Diageo and its Scotch brands will be hosting guest bartending shifts, bar takeovers, collaboration parties, and special offers in some of Manila’s top bars and retail stores.
