Whenever I go to Bangkok, I usually stay along Sukhumvit Road, since most places I frequent are there. However, I was traveling with my mom and sister on my last trip, and they wanted to explore Chinatown and the Riverside, so we had to find a hotel midway between those two places and Sukhumvit. That meant we had to look somewhere in the Silom or Sathorn area.
It was a long weekend, so hotels were booked out. Yet fortunately, I was afforded a room at the Mandarin Hotel Bangkok, which was perfect for our needs.
Mandarin Hotel Bangkok sits along the famous Rama IV Road in Bangrak District, a few steps away from the Sam Yan MRT station and a little further down from the Sala Daeng BTS Skytrain station. The hotel is just a few minutes away from shopping and dining in Silom and Sukhumvit, but for even more convenience, the hotel provides free shuttle services to Chinatown and other shopping areas.
Mandarin Hotel began its illustrious history in 1965—it is indeed “old,” but continual renovations—with the last major one concluding only in 2013—have kept it with the times. Currently, it is under the helm of Centre Point Hospitality, one of the leading homegrown brands in Thailand that has properties all over Bangkok.
Upon entering the hotel lobby, I was immediately drawn into the hotel’s attractively classical charm. I was welcomed personally by the hotel’s executive assistant manager who also handled my check-in.
The room was simple yet elegant. Frankly, given the hotel’s age, I was expecting a more dated design, but what we had was quite the opposite.
As expected of a four-star hotel, the room was appointed with what any leisure or business traveler would need, foremost of which are the king bed, which was comfortable, and the minibar, which came complimentary with our stay. The bathroom was a bit on the small side, but it was immaculately clean.
Breakfast was served at one of the hotel’s ballrooms, and on offer was a smorgasbord of tasty Thai, Western, and Asian dishes.
We spent most of our days out, but I took some time to check out the hotel’s facilities, including its nicely-landscaped swimming pool and its fitness center.
