Although Medan is one of Indonesia’s largest cities by population, economy, and land area, it doesn’t have a great deal of luxury hotels as one would hope, leaving those who travel in style with only a few options. The good thing, however, is that the city is home to JW Marriott Medan, which throughout its existence has earned a reputation of being Medan’s top hotel.
The hotel sits right within the central business district of Medan, a few minutes by GrabCar, taxi, or ojek (motorcycle) to places of interest in the city. The airport is about a 45-minute drive, though the airport train station is only less than a kilometer away.
My friend Indra of Kuliner Medan drove me from the train station to the hotel, and he was raving about how nice the rooms were in the hotel, so that made me excited. Few moments later, we pulled over at the hotel’s porte cochere, and we were immediately assisted by the hotel’s friendly staff.
The lobby, suffice to say, was more modest that the other JW Marriott properties that I’ve been to, but it looked luxurious nonetheless. But we didn’t spend too much time there, as the lady from the front desk then escorted us at once to the room, where I completed check-in formalities.
My Deluxe Room fit the “classic luxury” feel of a JW Marriott property. Furnishings, surfaces, and panels all set in wood, accompanied by a choice of mostly muted colors, gave the room an elegant, classic look.
The room had the five-star amenities I was expecting—plush bedding with exceptional pillows, an executive desk, a sitting area, and a large LED TV, among others. The bathroom, set in marble, was immaculate and had a tub and an awesome rain shower.
During the time I was staying at the hotel, breakfast was served in one of the ballrooms—though I was informed that Marriott Café, the all-day restaurant where breakfast is usually served, has since reopened recently. The morning spread was spectacular—it had an extensive array of Western, Asian, and Indonesian items.
Though I was unable to use them due to my packed schedule, the hotel boasts of an an infinity pool, an indoor whirlpool, a spa, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. These are in addition to four restaurants and extensive MICE facilities.
