On our trip to Scandinavia last year, one of the airlines we took had a completely automated check-in process. Being a fan of innovation, I was really amazed at how seamless the process was. Not many airlines here in Asia have this technology—many of us still rely on the conventional counter check-in—yet Jetstar has it in its Singapore Changi Airport base. Before my flight from Singapore to Medan, I was able to try it out, and here’s a walkthrough.
Upon arriving by MRT from the city, I proceeded by Skytrain to Terminal 1, which the Jetstar Group uses for its flights. The Jetstar Group uses rows 2 and 3 near door 1 of the said terminal.
I headed for the self check-in kiosk and immediately scanned my itinerary from my phone and my passport. The system located my booking and the check-in process began. After a few clicks, my boarding pass was printed.
I proceeded to the self-service bag drop counters, where there was a kiosk to scan my boarding pass and to print baggage tags.
Afterwards, I attached the tag to my luggage. (When I had to do this before, I had a hard time even with instructions, but with time and practice, I’m now good at it.)
The kiosk prompted me to lay my baggage piece-by-piece onto the conveyor (though I only had one luggage), then it produced a claim receipt. The conveyor moved my luggage, and I was done.
The process was supposed to take only a few minutes—there were no queues at the self check-in kiosk and bag drop counters—but since I was documenting the experience, I took quite a long time.

Passengers flying from Singapore to Manila are not allowed to use this service. Only passengers flying from Singapore to Siem Reap, Haikou, Shantou, Jakarta, Surabaya, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City, Perth (on 3K flights only), Phnom Penh, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Denpasar, Medan, Penang, Bangkok, Phuket, and Darwin are allowed.

Passengers with or without checked luggage may use the self check-in kiosks.

Passengers with visa requirements may use the kiosk, provided they do a quick document and visa check at the designated counters.

Passengers with infants or special service requests (e.g. wheelchair assistance) may not use the self check-in facilities.
