JAKARTA
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is commonly associated with horrible traffic jams. There’s also Kota Tua, which gives visitors a taste of old, colonial Batavia.
Three hours by train from Jakarta is Bandung, a popular weekend destination. Amid the cooler climate are a multitude of factory outlets, art deco buildings, and a cuisine of its own. Kawah Putih, a sulfuric hot spring, is only a couple of hours away from the city center.

BALI
Much has been said and written about the “Island of the Gods.” But even repeat visitors see themselves still mesmerized by the charm of Bali. From historic religious temples to stunning vistas, Bali has something for everyone. Some of the areas worth exploring are Kuta and Seminyak, the island’s beachside hubs of action; and Ubud, Bali’s cultural hotspot.
But those who feel that Bali is already been-there-done-that, there’s Lombok, which is three hours away only by boat. Near the main island are the Gilis, which offer gorgeous beaches and a more laidback atmosphere than Bali.

MEDAN
Medan, the largest city in Sumatra, is region’s center for commerce. Although admittedly, there’s not much to see within its center, the city makes up for it with its thriving local cuisine—trendy and traditional restaurants are interspersed with humble eateries and street food. Among the city’s must-try dishes are its take on char kway teow (fried noodles—its best-kept secret) and on chili crabs.

SURABAYA
Like Medan, Indonesia’s second largest city, Surabaya, is more a city for business than tourism. Aside from the food and culture, travelers include Surabaya in their itinerary as a base for Mount Bromo, a majestic active volcano a few hours away from the city.
