I was just in Singapore last week, and the excitement leading to the country’s Golden Jubillee, also known as SG50, is truly immense—from logos emblazoned everywhere to street celebrations. After all, with how the country has progressed as one of most prosperous in Asia over only five decades, there is so much to commemorate and be thankful about.
Singapore-based airline Jetstar Asia found a rather creative yet meaningful way to join in on the celebration. They recently painted one of its Airbus 320 jets a whimsical livery designed by renowned local artist, Michael Ng, who employed his distinctively bright, pop-art style.
The livery is mainly inspired by the black-naped oriole bird, a common garden bird in Singapore. Featured on currency and stamps, the beautiful bird, according to Mr. Ng symbolizes “the determination, strength and dynamism of our people over the last 50 years.”
Along with the faces of 25 Singaporeans based abroad that the airline flew in to celebrate National Day with their loved ones, adding more meaning to the fun livery are the faces of 25 unsung heroes of the city-state who Jetstar Asia selected from over 500 entries submitted to them.
Each with a story, the everyday heroes in the livery come from all walks of life, including a professional who gave up his job to help the poor in Cambodia and a kindhearted lady who has sacrificed her own welfare to aid the sick and elderly. According to the airline, these people exude the true spirit of Singapore, and the livery is their gift to the country’s people.
