I do go to Khaosan Road for merrymaking—it is after all, aside from being a backpacker hub, famous for its all-night, rowdy street parties. However, I choose not to stay there due to the lack of more reputable accommodation options.
Fortunately, ibis Bangkok Khaosan Viengtai opened near the center of the action, so for the first time—despite going in and out of Bangkok for five years already—the hotel got me to stay in Khaosan Road.
ibis Bangkok Khaosan Viengtai sits on a street adjacent to the main strip of Khaosan Road. Being located in one of the most buzzing and tourist-friendly areas in all of Bangkok, there’s no shortage of action in the area—right across is a bar with live music, while within the area are a plethora of restaurants, shops, and spas.
The rest of Bangkok is accessible by bus, taxi, tuktuk (motorcycle rickshaw), and ridesharing apps, while the city’s two airports can easily be reached by an express public bus that goes right into Khaosan Road.
ibis Styles is under the AccorHotels portfolio, along with Sofitel, MGallery, Pullman, Grand Mercure, Novotel, Mercure, and the ibis family. It’s an economy lifestyle hotel that focuses on delivering quality traveler essentials: a cozy bed in a nice room, an all-you-can-eat breakfast, broadband internet access, and some nice little extras. All these are offered at an affordable, all-inclusive price.
I took the bus to the hotel right after I landed from India. Upon arriving, I wasn’t able to help but notice how the lobby was quite funky and colorful—it really had the makings of an ibis Styles hotel.
Luckily, my room was ready when I arrived, so I immediately went up. Sure, it wasn’t as spacious or luxurious as Bangkok’s five-star hotels, but the room was—all the other choices in the area considered—more than sufficient. It was bright, clean, and modern—three qualities I look for most in a hotel room.
With regards to the noise, despite having a bar in front of the hotel, I did not hear even the faintest sound. Seeing the layout of the hotel, it does help that the rooms are away from the street.
As expected, it had all the necessary features and amenities, starting with the Sweet Bed by ibis, which I find to be among the best of its class. The toilet and shower were on the small side but were spotless.
I had breakfast at Streats Bar & Bistro, the hotel’s all-day restaurant, bar, and cafe. The selection was modest, consisting of Thai and Western fare.
I also had the chance to have dinner there, enjoying its selection of tasty tapas and more substantial entrees. Honestly, everything I had were delicious, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the nuea yang jim jeaw—the Australian tenderloin was juicy, and the tamarind and dry chili dip had the right spice kick to it.
Although the hotel doesn’t have a fitness center, it boasts of a swimming pool and a pool bar, which are a rarity in the area.
In all, it was a great stay, and I can’t stress enough how happy I am that there’s an international name-brand hotel in Khaosan Road now.
