I had already gone to Yogyakarta recently, and I was just returning to the city for one spot I missed—the Prambanan Temple. With two nights and a light itinerary, I knew I was spending a major chunk of my time in the hotel, so I opted for Yogyakarta’s nicest options. What piqued my interest was the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta, one of the few resort-style hotels in the city.
Sitting on a lovely, tranquil property amid a golf course, Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta is found off the city center—and that is one of its selling points. Accessibility isn’t a problem though, as aside from the hourly shuttle to Jalan Malioboro in town it provides complimentary, Grab, Uber, and GO-JEK are easy to summon from the hotel.
As mentioned, Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta is a resort-style property, and it isn’t a run-of-the-mill hotel—it draws inspiration from Yogyakarta, its locale, and its temples. As my Uber pulled into the hotel grounds, I felt its authenticity—despite it being an international five-star chain hotel.
I walked into the hotel’s lobby, and despite me being a millennial who likes hotels that are sleek and modern, I saw its charm, nonetheless. And adding to the warmth of the place were the smiles of its staff who were incredibly friendly.
I went into my room, and it followed the classic appeal and local charm of the hotel. Sure, may seem dated compared to other hotels, but it looked well-maintained, and the furnishings seemed new.
From the cozy king bed with a luxurious duvet to the handsome executive desk, the room was appointed to suit leisure and business travelers alike. The marbled bathroom, on the other hand, was immaculate and had an awesome rain shower, tub, and fragrant toiletries.
My room came with access to the hotel’s Regency Club, which compared to the other ones I’ve been to, was more relaxed a space. I tried out its evening cocktails, which had enough variety of food—that includes rice—to be a dinner substitute. By the way, the said evening cocktails did include liquor and beer.
I preferred to have my breakfasts at Kemangi Bistro, the hotel’s all-day restaurant wonderfully drenched in sunlight during the day. The selection included an array of Western, Asian, and Indonesian dishes.
Since I had plenty of time, I went around the hotel’s well-kept, expansive outdoor space. Aside from the gorgeous swimming pools, the hotel boasts of gardens, an aviary, and as mentioned, a golf course that draws in travelers from inside and outside Indonesia.
As for wellness, the hotel offers a fitness center and a spa, where I had a relaxing afternoon massage. Aside from the nicely decorated treatment room, what I liked about my spa experience was the skill of the therapist who was clearly adept at her craft.
