Since Thai food is so ubiquitous in Bangkok, we tend to skip the upscale Thai restaurants. But since we wanted to set a benchmark on what excellent Thai food tastes like, we chose to have lunch at Celadon of The Sukhothai Bangkok, which is said to be one of the best.
THE RESTAURANT
Celadon is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Bangkok. Sitting majestically on the serene front yard of The Sukhothai Bangkok, it gorgeously floats on a picturesque lotus pond, to which its guests can look into from its terraces. Its interiors are elegantly refined, giving the impression that it is unlike the other Thai restaurants that populate the city.
THE MENU
The menu consists of an array of classic, gentrified Thai fare—from the favorites like som tam (green papaya salad) and tom yum (sour and spicy soup) to a number of live seafood dishes.
What we opted to try that time though were lunch sets, the Kaprow Set Menu and the Horapa Set Menu, so we could taste most of what Celadon offers. Both consisted of eight courses.
OUR FAVORITES
We liked everything in the Khong Waang Celadon (Celadon appetizer selection), which combined a prawn cake, a crispy rice cup with scallop, a steamed flower-shaped dumpling with minced chicken, and a crabmeat spring roll.
We found the Yam Hauplee Hoyshell Rom Kwaun Yaang (spicy banana blossom salad, grilled Hokkaido scallops), which was rather unique for our taste buds, to be enjoyable.
Lastly, we loved their take on our favorite Thai food: Tom Khaa Gai Nai Maprow Orn (coconut soup with chicken, galangal, kaffir lime), Tom Yam Goong (spicy prawn soup, lemongrass, lime juice, and garden chilies), and Gaeng Phed Ped Yaang (roasted duck and red curry). In terms of taste, all were notches better than the ones we’ve tried elsewhere and back home.
VALUE FOR MONEY
Without a doubt, lunches at Celadon cost a lot compared to other restaurants offering the same menu. But of course, the food is as equally refined as its ambiance, so the experience is surely topnotch and thus worth the splurge.
