By way of international hotels, Phnom Penh doesn’t have many—after all, compared to other Southeast Asian capitals, it’s still up-and-coming. Hence, in my recent trip there, I opted to go for a local boutique hotel. My friend Kounila Keo of When in Phnom Penh recommended Blue Lime, and upon reading its reviews, I heeded her advice.
Blue Lime is located in the heart of Phnom Penh, tucked away in a quiet side street in the city’s downtown. The boutique hotel enjoys close proximity—i.e. walking distance—to landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Riverside Park, and the National Museum of Cambodia. Getting elsewhere in the city, including the airport in Pochentong, is easy, thanks to the presence of ride-hailing app Grab, which provides both car and motorbike services.
After a long journey by bus from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, I was welcomed into the hotel’s quaint lobby by the friendly front staff. Later, Grace, the general manager who’s Filipino, introduced herself and personally accompanied me to my room. Throughout my stay, she took care of my needs, and I was happy to make that Filipino connection.
Anyway, the room was by no means like the ones I’m used to—it clearly wasn’t the Sheraton nor the Hilton. But it was beautifully decorated and furnished, and as a bonus, it had its own plunge pool, thus exceeding my expectation for a small boutique hotel.
All basic traveler needs were covered by the room, and the bed was splendid. The bathroom, although on the small side, was clean and kept well, so I had no complaints whatsoever.
My plated Western breakfast was served by the pool. It was simple, but everything was tasty, especially the breads.
I spent most of my time chilling by the pool, which serves as the hotel’s centerpiece. The charming pool area is nicely decked out with day beds and is covered by trees, making it perfect for lazy afternoons.
