To be perfectly honest, I see Hong Kong as a been-there-done-that destination that I usually come there nowadays just to shop, eat at the usual places, and stay in its fancy hotels. That being said, I don’t actively look for opportunities to go there—unless, of course, there’s a really good sale on airfares.
I was recently invited by Hong Kong Tourism Board to the launch of its new global campaign “Best of All, It’s in Hong Kong,” and it was so inspiring that I found myself planning another trip for this summer.
Hong Kong Tourism Board’s new marketing campaign, as mentioned, is entitled “Best of All, It’s in Hong Kong,” and its thrust is to encourage visitors to see the city from the perspective of a local. Four prominent locals were tapped to do commercials, each representing four Hong Kong highlights:
Tasting the Town – Three-star Michelin chef Umberto Bombana, who has settled in Hong Kong over the last 20 years, explains how the city is a gastronomic paradise even for the most discerning of palates.
Family Time – Movie star and helicopter pilot Michael Wong takes his family for an adventure from sea to sky.
Journeys of Discovery – Film star Sean Lau leaves the rush of the city to enjoy nature, one of Hong Kong’s unexpected highlights.
Hipster Stuff – Talented fashion designer Anais Jourden Mak goes around hipster Hong Kong to derive inspiration for her next project—a costume for a concert of a superstar.
Showing how Hong Kong is inspiring especially when explored like a local, Chef Margarita Fores, who apparently spent some of her earlier years in the said city, returned to seek inspiration for a special menu that fused Filipino and Hong Kong flavors. Bringing with her ingredients only found in Hong Kong, the Best Female Chef of Asia treated us to an array of exceptional dishes, including crab trio sformato (inspired by the Shanghaianese hairy crab and The Chairman) and spotted Philippine garoupa “in cartoccio” (inspired by winter claypot rice).
